2008 School Field Trip Show: The Commedia Voyages of Sinbad

Alongside its summer seasons, Apple Hill ran a spring field trip show for school groups on weekday mornings. In 2008 the choice was Lane Riosley's The Commedia Voyages of Sinbad, which used the Italian commedia tradition of tumbling and improvised banter. Teachers booked a date, paid a deposit and brought whole classes by bus; homeroom teachers were admitted free. Commedia shows suited these visits because they are fast, physical and easy for young audiences to follow, and many ended with a short question-and-answer session with the cast. Read more about planning a theatre field trip, or see the earlier Treasure Island field trip show.

THE COMMEDIA VOYAGES OF SINBAD

By Lane Riosley

Boat

All aboard for exciting sea-faring adventures as the commedia troupe guides us through a creative version of the seven voyages of Sinbad the Sailor with patter verse, tumbling, mock combat and clowning! Visit foreign lands as the players bring to life the giant Roc bird, the King of Skeletons, Zughub the Ogre, the Old Man of the Sea and more! This form of improvisational theatre which began in Italy in the fifteenth century bursts with physical humor and witty banter that breathes new life and energy into the classic tale.
